Project Proposals

For this class, I really wanted to focus on a project that could give back to a community that is under served. I thought up of 3 projects to potential work on for this semester.

The first one was a text-911 application for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people. It was something that I have always wanted to do. I have had hearing issues since I was young, but I myself am not Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing. This, however, gave me a better perspective in realizing that D/HH people do not have the luxury of dialing 911 like hearing people do.



Secondly, I wanted to work on a domestic violence application that would help victims discretely connect to resources in their area. This would be hidden within a fake application, wherein the user could access information safely and discretely within a hidden place in the app.



Lastly, I wanted to work with the Family Service Agency of San Francisco - Felton Institute. In the Bay Area, many elderly people have issues accessing and getting the help they need as they age. Many low-income families and families with disabled members also are afflicted by not knowing community resources available to them.

The End

The time has come! This final week I was polishing up my design, booklet, and poster. I had initially prototyped the application, but I revised it to be less flashy like my peers recommended. It was a lot smoother. Below is a video of a prototype of SAFE State These last few days gave me a lot of insight into this project a a whole, and my hope to continue on with it in the future. If the app does not end up getting developed, then hopefully a larger conversation was started because of it. My experts thought it would be a good idea to explore this further, so I am excited to go on and how else I can make this a useful project. Midterm & Surveys

For this week, I mainly focused on getting my survey checked out and finalized, then distributed. I also was finalizing some work for the midterm, such as getting interviews with my experts, as well as figuring out the design of the project. I sent out the survey to some friends who were Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing, as well as my experts. I also sent it out to a few other peers and had them send it to their family members. Additionally, I conducted more research into the existing products out on the market and did an analysis. I compared it to what I was hoping to do and I found that this application would make it much easier for D/HH people to access 911. As opposed to an average of a 5-7 step process with existing things in the market, the app would only take 4 steps upon reaching emergency service.
